Chinese Government Condemns US of ‘Contradictory Stances’ Over Trade Levy Warning
The former US president’s newest warning to impose an further complete levy on items imported from China has been described as a “typical example” of United States’ contradictory behavior, according to the Chinese government.
A representative of the ministry additionally remarked that the nation could enact its own unrevealed “responsive actions” if the American leader follows through on his pledge, emphasizing that the country was “not afraid” of a looming trade conflict.
On Friday, Trump retaliated at Beijing’s move to strengthen its policies for overseas sales of rare earths, accusing Beijing of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the world “under its control”.
Furthermore, he vowed to cancel a scheduled meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping, which was arranged for a summit in Seoul later this month.
The former president’s remarks on last Friday rattled global markets, with the benchmark US stock index falling by over two and a half percent, marking its steepest fall since April.
These statements renewed fears of a commercial dispute between the United States and China.
This past spring, the two sides had agreed to remove high import duties on each other’s imports, which had raised the prospect of commerce ceasing between the two countries.
This left, United States levies on products from China incurring an additional 30% levy compared with the start of the year, while items from the United States entering the country face a import levy.
Beijing’s recent statements – issued by the Commerce Ministry in the form of written responses to media inquiries – echoed terminology from the zenith of the latest commercial tensions.
Officials denounced United States controls on chips and semi-conductors while supporting China’s own overseas sale regulations on rare earths as “standard procedures” to ensure domestic safety and that of the global community.
The spokesperson remarked that for “a long time”, the United States had “expanded the interpretation” of national security, exploited foreign shipment regulations and “adopted discriminatory practices against Beijing.
“Resorting to tariff threats is not the correct approach to engage with Beijing,” their representative said.
“The nation’s view” on a import duty dispute has consistently been consistent: we wish to avoid one, but we are not afraid of one.”
Recently, China announced it was reinforcing export controls on rare earths and additional substances critical for cutting-edge industry.
The action was viewed as a significant step, as the state handles about the vast majority of the global rare earth supply, which are utilized in products such as renewable energy components and handheld devices.
New remarks from the US and China are being seen by analysts as a means of bolstering negotiating stances in preparation for future trade talks.
