Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative including divine entities, demons, and dark forces increasing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

Episode 3 ended with a huge suspense moment and presented the initial group of characters who will branch out from the primary party to undertake their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.

This warrior group features the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Given 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

This explains, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the characters’ stories before branching into three smaller tables: Fighters, Schemers, and Questers.

What Defines the Warrior Group

According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for participants who are drawn to a classically intense combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander might appear out of place, but the developments of the third episode show why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

First, the team has a clear idea where to go next after a violent opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing started the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his selfish purposes, entering the secret base, assaulting the character, and taking all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The traitor then paid off his liabilities and escaped to a secure base in the remote area, north of the city, with Cyd close behind.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each character has a specific drive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and trusted friend, seeks vengeance.
  • The adventurer knows the region and cautions that it is a nasty location.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having defied his house’s orders to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their position as prominent individuals in House Halovar could assist the group enter areas they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter swore a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his rescue and will now follow him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are sought by the powers that govern the setting for a multiple motives, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The cleric betrayed the powerful family and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the family.

This means them few options but to travel to Timmony in search of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we learn that the warrior group won’t be around next week, leaving the remaining eight cast members to assemble the Questers and Planners parties.

Viewers can look forward to learning which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
