European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
