Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such medications need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
