In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
